How Accurate Is Phone-Number Location?

Consent-based phone location is accurate to within a normal GPS margin, often a few metres to a few dozen metres, because the position comes from the holder's own device at the moment they agree to share it. That is far more precise than carrier triangulation or IP-based lookups, which only narrow a phone to a cell area or a city.

Accuracy depends entirely on where the location data comes from. The three common sources give very different results.

Device GPS versus the alternatives

Device GPS, which is what a consent-based share uses, is the most accurate: the phone reports its own satellite-derived position, usually good to within a normal GPS margin outdoors. Carrier triangulation, by contrast, estimates position from cell towers and is only accurate to a broad area. IP-based lookups are the least precise, often placing a phone in the wrong part of a city entirely.

Because a consent-based service asks the holder's device directly, it inherits GPS accuracy rather than the coarse estimates that "lookup by number" tools rely on.

What affects the result

Indoors, in dense cities, or with location services set to low accuracy, GPS can be less precise. A clear outdoor position with location services on is the best case. Either way, the reading reflects where the phone actually was when it was shared.
